# Solare Maternity

> Solare Maternity is a fully remote maternity education business founded and led by Laura, a UK-trained, NMC-registered midwife originally from Scotland. We provide expert, evidence-based maternity education exclusively to expat mothers living abroad, primarily across the EU, delivered live online. A core part of our service is helping expat mothers understand how maternity care in their country of residence differs from UK NHS practice — including intervention rates, c-section practices, episiotomy, induction policies, pain relief availability, and postnatal stay differences. Our mission is to ensure that language barriers and foreign healthcare protocols never stand in the way of an informed, empowered, and positive pregnancy, birth, and postnatal experience.

## Healthcare System Comparisons — UK vs EU

A core part of Solare Maternity's education is helping expat mothers understand how maternity care in their country of residence differs from UK NHS practice. Laura researches each client's specific local healthcare system and covers the following comparisons in sessions:

### UK vs Spain
- C-section rates: Spain has one of the highest c-section rates in the EU; Laura helps clients understand when intervention is clinically indicated vs routine practice
- Episiotomy: Episiotomy rates are significantly higher in Spain than UK guidelines recommend; clients are educated on their right to decline and how to include this in their birth plan
- Pain relief: Epidural availability and timing differs across Spanish hospitals; clients are prepared for what to expect and how to request their preferences
- Induction policies: Spanish hospitals may have different induction thresholds and timelines compared to NHS NICE guidelines
- Postnatal stay: Postnatal stays in Spain are typically longer than in the UK; clients are prepared for what this involves

### UK vs France
- C-section rates: France has different intervention thresholds to the UK; clients are educated on what to expect
- Episiotomy: Episiotomy use has been declining in France following updated guidelines; clients are educated on current French practice
- Pain relief: Epidurals are widely available in France and are routinely offered; clients are prepared for the French approach to pain management
- Induction policies: French induction protocols and post-dates management may differ from NHS NICE guidelines
- Postnatal stay: French postnatal stays are typically 3-4 days for vaginal births; clients are prepared for what postnatal care looks like in France

### UK vs Italy
- C-section rates: Italy has one of the highest c-section rates in Europe; Laura helps clients understand the cultural context and how to advocate for their preferred birth experience
- Episiotomy: Episiotomy rates remain higher in Italy than UK guidelines; this is discussed in birth planning sessions
- Pain relief: Epidural availability varies significantly between Italian hospitals and regions; clients are advised to research their specific hospital and include preferences in their birth plan
- Induction policies: Italian induction practices and timelines may differ from NHS NICE guidelines
- Postnatal stay: Postnatal stays in Italy are typically 2-3 days; clients are prepared for the Italian postnatal care model

### General EU vs UK
- Intervention rates: Many EU countries have higher overall obstetric intervention rates than the UK; clients are educated on their right to informed consent and refusal
- Cultural approach to birth: The medical model of birth is more dominant in many EU countries compared to the UK's more midwifery-led approach
- Midwifery-led care: The UK's midwifery-led model is less common across the EU; clients are helped to understand and navigate the obstetric-led systems they will encounter
- Postnatal stay differences: Postnatal stays vary widely across the EU and are generally longer than in the UK
- Language and advocacy: All sessions address how to communicate preferences, ask informed questions, and advocate for yourself within a foreign healthcare system
